Target Participants

Learners with < 3 years of spine surgery experience or surgical residents / fellows undergoing training.

Course Objectives

The course aims to teach principal concepts based on case presentations of common spinal conditions and their management. Hands-on sawbones workshops will provide an opportunity to handle and use common spinal instruments and implants.

Course Description

Surgical principals in management of: Acute spinal trauma, Degenerative disc disease, Spinal tumours, Scoliosis, Chiari I,Infections, Common spinal complications and Medical legal issues in spinal surgery.

Learning objectives
Spinal trauma - Classify the injury according to fracture morphology, instability, and neurological status
Spinal trauma – Apply evidence-based decision making to the management of the patient
Tumor - Recognize the presence or possibility of spinal instability
Tumor - Perform specific surgical interventions
Degeneration - Use evidence-based decision making when recommending operative and nonoperative interventions
Infection - Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests to confirm infection and identify the causative organism
Deformity – Order and interpret appropriate imaging to assess spinal balance, flexibility, and spinal cord anomalies
