12th AOSpine Advanced Level Live-Tissue Training Days—Prevention and Management of Complications in Spine Surgery (Day 1)

In a live-tissue environment (anesthetized pigs) participants will experience:

  • The common approaches (anterior) to the thoracic and lumbar spine
  • Recognize important anatomical structures relevant to each approach
  • Principles in the avoidance and management of common complications
  • Vascular repair, selected visceral, abdominal and thoracic repair techniques


The course comprises an introductional lecture (anatomy of the pig), hands-on practical exercises and a Question & Answer session with the experts.

The event will comprise of evidence-based lectures, practical exercises, panel discussions and will provide ample time for discussion between faculty and participants.

Learning objectives
Select the appropriate approach for the type of pathology and instrumentation
Recognize advantages/disadvantages and limitations of each approach
Identify and avoid damage to important structures relevant to an approach
Know and understand practical principles of vascular, pulmonary and bowel repair
Perform and improve practical competency in assisted repair of the above
